Is Solar Panel Cleaning Worth It? The Sydney Data Says Yes

Dirty panels can lose up to 25% of their output — and Sydney's dust, pollen, and bird droppings make the problem worse than most homeowners realise. Here's the honest breakdown of whether cleaning pays for itself.

If you've spent $8,000 to $15,000 installing a solar system on your Sydney home, you want it working at full capacity. But the same roof that catches sunlight also catches dust, pollen, bird droppings, and fine particulate matter — and once that layer builds up on your panels, your system quietly starts underperforming. Most homeowners never notice.

How much efficiency do dirty panels actually lose?

Research consistently shows that soiled solar panels underperform clean ones — the question is by how much. In lightly polluted environments, the loss might be 5–10%. In urban and suburban Sydney, particularly in areas with heavy traffic, eucalyptus trees, or significant bird activity, the loss can reach 15–25%.

The mechanism is straightforward: photovoltaic cells generate electricity by absorbing sunlight. Any layer on the glass surface — even a thin film of dust — reduces the amount of light reaching the cell. The system still runs, but at reduced output. Your inverter display shows you a number; it just doesn't tell you what that number would be if the panels were clean.

Bird droppings are especially damaging because they cause hotspots — localised areas of intense heat where the blocked cell can't generate current but still absorbs infrared radiation. Over time, hotspots degrade the cell permanently. A single large dropping in the wrong spot can affect the output of an entire string of panels, not just the cell it's sitting on.

Quick numbers: does cleaning pay off?

A typical 6.6kW Sydney solar system generates roughly 26–28 kWh per day in good conditions. At a 20% efficiency loss, you're losing around 5–6 kWh daily — that's approximately $1.50–$2 per day in lost self-consumption or feed-in value. Over a year, that's $550–$730 in lost returns.

A professional solar panel clean from Vero Cleaning typically costs $150–$300 depending on your system size and roof access. The maths is straightforward.

Why Sydney conditions make this worse than average

Sydney sits in a subtropical climate with long dry periods between rainfall events. Unlike Melbourne, where regular rain does a reasonable job of rinsing panels, Sydney's summer weather patterns often mean weeks of hot, dry conditions during the peak solar generation period — exactly when you want the panels performing at their best.

During spring, Sydney's native vegetation produces enormous quantities of pollen. The fine particles settle across roof surfaces and bond to the panel glass with morning dew. Come summer, the Western Sydney dust and smoke haze from rural fires add another layer. Homes near the coast deal with salt residue from sea spray, which leaves a stubborn mineral film that rain alone can't remove.

And then there are the birds. Cockatoos, pigeons, Indian mynas, and currawongs are everywhere in Sydney's suburban canopy, and they're not shy about using your solar array as a perching spot. A flock of corellas passing through can leave a system looking like a Jackson Pollock painting.

Does rain clean solar panels?

This is the most common question we get, and the honest answer is: partially. Rain will rinse off loose dust in optimal conditions — but it won't remove hardened bird droppings, pollen residue, or the calcium and mineral deposits that accumulate over time. It also tends to leave streaks and spots as the water dries, which can actually worsen the light-blocking effect.

Many homeowners assume that because it rained last week, the panels must be clean. They're rarely as clean as you'd think. We clean plenty of panels that homeowners describe as "fine" — and they're not.

Can you clean solar panels yourself?

Technically, yes — but we'd encourage caution on several fronts. First, working on a roof without proper safety equipment is genuinely dangerous and one of the most common causes of serious injury in Australian homes. Second, using the wrong cleaning products or abrasive tools can scratch the glass surface or damage the anti-reflective coating, permanently reducing the panel's efficiency. Most manufacturer warranties explicitly state that damage from improper cleaning is not covered.

Professional cleaners use purified or deionised water (which leaves no mineral residue) and soft-bristle tools designed specifically for solar glass. The result is a spot-free clean that doesn't void your warranty and doesn't put you at risk.

How often should you clean solar panels in Sydney?

For most Sydney homes, we recommend a clean once or twice per year. Homes under trees, near roosting birds, or in high-dust areas (Western Sydney, near construction sites) will benefit from more frequent cleaning — every three to four months in some cases.

A good indicator is to check your inverter's daily output against the same period last year. If there's a meaningful drop that can't be explained by seasonal changes in sun hours, dirty panels are usually the culprit. We can often identify this in minutes when we attend for a quote.

The bottom line

Solar panel cleaning is one of the most straightforward maintenance tasks in terms of return on investment. The cost is low, the benefit is measurable, and unlike most home maintenance, you can actually see the financial return on your inverter display within days of a clean. For a system that cost thousands of dollars to install, spending a few hundred dollars a year to keep it running at full capacity is a no-brainer.
