How Much Does Bird Proofing Solar Panels Cost in Sydney?

$33 a metre, explained. How to measure your own array from the ground, what's included, and a calculator for your roof.

Solar panels on a Sydney roof with bird proofing mesh fitted around the edge, no birds underneath

Quick summary

The short answer

Bird proofing is priced by the metre around the outside edge of your solar array, not per panel. $33 a metre on a single storey, $38 on a double, $35 for strata buildings. There's no minimum, so a small array is priced the same per metre as a big one. Then add the callout fee for your region, $0 to $80. GST is included and the total is rounded to the nearest $10.

A typical 20-panel system on a single storey comes to around $890. A one-row 12-panel array is around $510. The next section shows how to work out your own number from the ground.

How to measure your array without going up

Most residential panels are about 1.7 metres long and 1 metre wide. Count how many panels are in each row and how many rows there are, then add up the outside edge.

Two rows of 10, portrait

Width is 10 panels × 1 m = 10 m. Depth is 2 rows × 1.7 m = 3.4 m. Perimeter is 10 + 10 + 3.4 + 3.4 = about 27 m.

One row of 12, portrait

Width is 12 m. Depth is 1.7 m. Perimeter is 12 + 12 + 1.7 + 1.7 = about 15.5 m.

Panels in landscape

Swap the numbers. A row of 8 landscape panels is 8 × 1.7 m = 13.6 m wide and 1 m deep.

Split arrays

If the panels are in two separate groups on different parts of the roof, measure each group and add them together.

You don't have to get this exact. Give us the rough count and we'll confirm it from satellite imagery when we quote. The calculator below does the maths once you have a metre figure.

What moves the price up or down

Storeys

$33 a metre single storey, $38 double. Higher roofs mean more time on ropes.

Perimeter, not panel count

A long thin array has more edge than a square one with the same number of panels. That's why we price by the metre.

Strata

$35 a metre for strata and apartment buildings, quoted after a look at access.

Bundled with a solar clean

Both services get 10% off when done on the same visit. The callout fee is charged once.

Callout fee by region

Inner City, Eastern Suburbs, Inner West$0
Lower North Shore$30
Upper North Shore, Ryde and Northern Suburbs, South Sydney, Canterbury-Bankstown, Sutherland Shire$50
Northern Beaches, Hills District, Western Sydney$80

How we work out the metres: we assume standard panels about 1 m wide and 1.7 m tall, mounted portrait and side by side, with mesh fitted right around each row. A row of 10 panels is about 24 m of mesh, so 20 panels in two rows is about 48 m. This is an estimate. The final price depends on the metres of mesh needed. We check it with a quick phone call and a look at your roof online. No site visit needed. A solar clean booked with bird proofing is quoted separately, also 10% off.

Mesh or spikes?

Mesh. It seals the gap under the panels, which is the only place pigeons actually want to be. Spikes have their place on downpipe returns and ledges where birds perch, and we fit those too where they make sense. But spikes around a solar array don't stop a pigeon walking underneath.

We also don't drill or glue anything. Screwing brackets into panel frames or gluing to the roof is how you end up with a warranty argument with your installer. Clips do the job and come off cleanly if a panel ever needs replacing.

Why not wait?

Pigeons nest in spring and summer. One pair becomes a colony. The longer they're there, the more nests, droppings and feathers end up under the panels and in your gutters, and the more we have to clear before the mesh goes on. The biggest mistake people make is waiting once the pigeons are on the roof every day.

How paying works

Nothing up front. We do the job, send your before and after photos, then invoice you by email and text. You have 7 days to pay by bank transfer, PayID or cash. No card surcharges, no deposit, no cancellation fee, and no charge for a wasted trip. The price in your quote is the price you pay. It only changes if the property is different to what you told us, and we always call you before we start. Our own mistakes are never passed on. All prices include GST.

Common questions about bird proofing cost

Is GST included?

Yes. Every price here and in the calculator includes GST.

Is there a minimum charge?

No. A small array is priced at the same per-metre rate. The callout fee still applies.

Will it void my panel warranty?

Nothing is screwed or glued to the panels or the roof. The mesh clips to the frame and comes off cleanly. If you're unsure, check your installer's terms and we'll happily talk to them.

Is it cruel to the birds?

No. We clear nests by hand and move eggs and chicks to a safe spot before the mesh goes on. After that, the birds simply can't get under.

How long does the mesh last?

Around 10 years. It's UV-stabilised for Sydney sun. There's nothing to maintain, and if a clip works loose we refix it free.

Will they come back?

Not under the panels. They may still land on top, so a solar clean at the same time keeps the glass clear.

How long does the install take?

Three to four hours for most homes, five at the most.
